QUINCY JONES & CLAUDE NOBS PRESENT: MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL 1991 & 1992 (DVD)
imgbillets/min_248.jpgWhen I started the Festival back in 1967 with two friends, I had a budget of US$ 7000 for a three-day event. I called it the International Montreux Jazz Festival because we had bands from all over Europe and one American band: Charles Lloyd with Keith Jarrett.

I never dreamt that nearly a quarter of a century later I would have the tremendous honor of having Quincy Jones co-produce the Festival for three years, in 1991, 1992 and 1993.

In 1991 and 1992, Sony recorded the entire Festival in High-Definition Television for the first time. Together with Quincy, I had the privilege of witnessing some of the extraordinary moments that you will enjoy on this DVD.

The mixture of styles is something that the Montreux audience has been exposed to since the Festival’s very earliest days.

This DVD is a perfect combination of sound and vision and is giving us the pleasure of the little glimpses, smiles, tears and the whole emotion generated when high-definition recording and the finest possible sound come together.

Quincy Jones: The 75th Birthday Celebration - Live at Montreux 2008 released on Blu-ray and 2 DVD's (July 21, 2009)...
imgbillets/min_238.jpgA few mentors have marked the life of Claude Nobs, Founder and CEO of the Montreux Jazz Festival, and Quincy Jones is definitely one of them. Quincy’s 75th birthday was an ideal opportunity to pay a tribute. For almost a year, work was underway to make this evening a unique world event and all the artists accepted without hesitating, some even volunteering to take part!

The result is a very impressive line-up and a very well-deserved tribute to a giant who has one of the most remarkable careers in the history of music.

All profits from the sales of this Blu-Ray will go to the Quincy Jones Foundation to support and promote initiatives around the world that contribute to the health, well-being and dignity of children. Its mission is to give young people a voice to inspire and empower them to live to their fullest potential.

MONTREUX SOUNDS
Note added on 2008-12-05
Montreux Jazz Festival Digital Archives
imgbillets/min_117.jpgDuring the celebration of the 40th edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival last year, founder Claude Nobs underlined the urgency of properly preserving the 40 years' worth of Festival material that has accumulated since its conception.
Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Montreux Sounds SA have decided to join forces to create a unique and first of a kind high resolution digital archive of the Montreux Jazz Festivals.
EPFL hosts one of the most renowned and largest centers of excellence in digital media processing thanks to a strong team of faculty members and researchers behind many pioneering technologies in use in today’s professional as well as consumer digital media products.
The goal of this ambitious project is, on the one hand, to exploit the know-how and expertise of EPFL to create the most technologically advanced high resolution digital media archive ever produced, and on the other hand, to take this opportunity to set the ground for conception of novel and advanced technologies for tomorrow’s digital media.
Because of the magnitude and the diversity of media involved, such an archive will require peta-byte class storage systems (1 peta bytes = 1’000’000 giga bytes) and involves expertise in the following areas: signal processing, image and video processing, compression, video analysis and annotation, audiovisual content enhancement, visualization, man-machine interface, and media security.
Several research laboratories at EPFL together with their researchers, doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students, will be involved in this project during the next few years. In addition to scientific, technological and educational impacts of such an endeavor, development of this archive will enable a reliable, long lasting, secured, and seamless access to a true and unique cultural resource for both professional and educational purposes, ensuring that the Montreux Jazz Festival, Claude Nobs' lifetime achievement, and its rich history remain an important part of our regional identity for generations to come.
